About Wood Heat Index
Wood Heat Index measures what Americans pay for firewood, county by county, and keeps the record. Firewood is hard to price. Sellers use different units, prices vary widely from place to place, and there is no central price list. So we combine public government data on energy prices, climate, and wood heating with state price surveys and real prices from sellers and readers. The result is one price range per county, with a plain statement of how sure we are.
There is no official U.S. firewood price series, and the research record of firewood prices ends in 2010. Wood Heat Index updates every county's estimate each month and archives every month's numbers, so the record keeps growing.
Every page is built ahead of time from a documented model. The methodology page explains how the estimate is built, what evidence each county rests on, and what the model can't see.
Wood Heat Index is not a marketplace, doesn't sell firewood, and doesn't take a cut of any sale. If it carries advertising, that's disclosed on the privacy page.
